Gentai was primarily a painter but he also published some of his work in woodblock-printed picture books. One of these books, entitled Gentai Sensei Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Master Gentai) and published in 1805, included twenty-four pictures of flowers and (or) birds. These pictures are shown here. Gentai’s style was influenced by Chinese art, especially paintings by Shen Nanpin who introduced a new style of painting to Japan when he visited Nagasaki in the 1730s.
